Research Methods in Education 

Credits: 02                                                                                              Duration: 8 weeks 

Eligibility: This course is meant for any graduate and post graduate students, research scholars, teachers, NGO workers and freelance researchers in the field of education. It requires basic understanding of the recent educational problems and issues in school education, teacher education and higher education.

Process of Enrolment: Candidates will be enrolled to this course on first cum first basis. Total 50 number of candidates will be enrolled in one cycle. 

Introduction:

The course on "Research Methods in Education” provides a comprehensive understanding of’ theoretical frameworks and methodologies essential for conducting educational research. Rooted in the scholarly traditions of the field, this course equips participants with the necessary tools to design, implement, and analyse educational research. From understanding different research paradigms to mastering data, collection and analysis methods, participants will develop a strong foundation in conducting empirical research in the realm of education. Through engaging discussions, practical exercises and critical evaluation of published studies, this course empowers participants to contribute to the advancement of educational knowledge and evidence-based practices.

Course Objectives: The students shall be able to;

1.Develop understanding of concepts, nature and types of research in education and to differentiate between qualitative and quantitative research.

2.Develop skills in critically review existing literature, select appropriate research design and prepare research proposals.

3.Develop  and standardise various tools and select representative sample from the population.

4.Develop skills of writing research report, abstract with proper citation and references. 

Learning Outcomes: The  students shall be able to;

1.Explain the differences between quantitative and qualitative research methods.

2.Identify and review relevant research studies related to selected areas of research.

3.Plan and carry out educational research by using experiment, survey and qualitative research methods.

4.Formulate proposals in the relevant research areas in the field of education.

5.Differentiate between tools and techniques in educational research.

6.Develop standardise research tools (quantitative and qualitative)

7.Describe different methods of sample selection in different types of research.

8.Select representative sample from the population.

9.Select and use relevant data analysis techniques for educational research.

10.Write research reports in various formats (abstract, dissertations, paper). 

UNIT: I- Concept and Types of Educational Research

  • Concept, nature and types of research; quantitative Vs. qualitative
  • Review of related literature; steps and applications
  • Selecting appropriate research designs (experimental ,correlational, survey,  case study, grounded theory, content analysis etc.).
  •  Research proposal: concept, importance and basic elements (title, objectives, questions, hypothesis, rationale of study, methodology, time budgeting )

UNIT: II- Methods of Data Collections, Analysis and Reporting

  • Tools  & Techniques of data collection: quantitative and qualitative tools; process of development and standardisation
  •  Sample: Concept, importance and methods of selection.
  • Data analysis: qualitative and quantitative
  • Research reports: Formats for thesis, project report, research papers, abstracts, writing references and bibliography (APA) 

Assessment: This course will follow five-point grading system (A-excellent, B-very good, C-good, D-satisfactory, E-needs improvement) both for assignments/projects and quizzes. The assessment will be based on the quality of the projects/assignments (50% weightage) and term end online testing (50% weightage). The online testing will consist of 30 multiple choice questions with four options. Certificate will be issued to candidates securing at least D grade.
